Pacific Academy of Science inaugural congress
The inaugural Pacific Academy of Sciences Congress: Harnessing the Knowledge of the Pacific was held from 16 to 18 February 2026 in Apia, Samoa. Sieni Tiraa attended the inaugural congress on behalf of TPVM and presented her research for her Masters thesis. The event brought together researchers and partners from across the region to unite scholars and to provide a platform to elevate the research in the Pacific particularly in the field of science. It provided an opportunity to share and learn from their specific areas and network. As one of the presenters, I had the opportunity to share my thesis on land tenure and tourism development on Rarotonga highlighting the implications that exist on ground and lead to socio-cultural and environmental tensions. Presenting to an audience of Pacific scholars reinforced the value of research grounded in our own contexts and cultural knowledge.
A standout aspect of the congress was the chance to connect with Pacific researchers doing fascinating and impactful work. ““It was inspiring to see others across the Pacific working on similar important issues facing our communities. It reminded me that we are not alone in our efforts and through these opportunities, are given the time and space to learn from one another.” Over three days, the congress created a powerful space for learning, partnership, and regional solidarity demonstrating the value and quality of Pacific-led research and the collective commitment to addressing shared challenges.
