Atiu Nui Maruarua: an island and its houses
Funder: Tupaia Grant | Pacific Academy of Sciences · Year: 2026-2027
Atiu Nui Maruarua is an ethnographic project examining contemporary Atiu governance and community networks beyond the home island of Atiu (Enuamanu). It traces the history and role of four Atiu buildings—meeting halls and community gathering places—located in Rarotonga, Auckland, Papeete, and Atiu itself, collectively known as Atiu Nui Maruarua (I–IV). Mobilised through Atiu leadership and cultural practice, these buildings function as key nodes in a diasporic network extending beyond Atiu and the Cook Islands since the late twentieth century. Using oral history and photo essay methods, the project will be a key study in the persistence of Indigenous governance and cultural continuity amid post-war decolonization in the region, and ongoing depopulation following Cook Islands self-government in 1965. By reframing emigration, the project will explore how Atiu peoples have imbued the meeting house with aspects of familial, social, and cultural meaning. The research will result in a book and a public website.
