New special issue on tīvaevae

In August 2025, our new Director Dr Emma Powell along with Cook Islands PhD-candidate (Otago), Cameron David Young, announced the publication of a Special Issue with Pacific journal Pacific Dynamics called “Tīvaevae: Connection, Collaboration and New Directions in Cook Islands Research”. The call for papers was released in early 2024 and invited researchers and authors to submit articles on their use, extensions and critiques of the tīvaevae conceptual framework, method and methodology. Altogether, the articles represent a new generation of Cook Islands researchers committed to theorising and developing “culturally responsive” frameworks for Cook Islands and Pacific research.

The issue was launched at the University of Otago and online on 9 September 2025 (NZT). The journal is open-access and available online. A limited number of hard-copies will be made available to contributing authors and several copies will be deposited at national libraries in New Zealand and the Cook Islands.
