Griffith University collaborates with TPVM on seabed minerals research
Te Puna Vai Marama and Griffith University have partnered on a research project to better understand Cook Islanders’ views on seabed mining. From 9–12 September, Professor Chris Flemming and Andrew Buckwell visited Rarotonga to begin this work alongside researchers at Te Puna Vai Marama.
The project uses a unique approach called Q methodology—a social science tool that groups participants based on their feelings and perceptions. It helps structure people’s subjective views on complex issues like seabed mining.
During their visit, the team introduced the method to local stakeholders and began collecting responses. Over 20 Cook Islanders have already participated, with a goal of reaching around 60. The research aims to support informed public dialogue and guide future decisions about seabed mineral exploration.
