Selane Tairea Reflects on Youth Parliament 2026 Experience
Research Fellow Selane Tairea spent last week experiencing the inner workings of parliament through the Cook Islands National Youth Council’s Youth Parliament 2026, a five-day immersive learning experience designed to strengthen young Cook Islanders’ understanding of, and interest in, parliamentary processes while igniting the next generation of leaders and decision-makers.
Selane highlighted the energy of the programme and the many discussions around youth involvement. She particularly valued the opportunity to meet young people from across the Pa Enua and engage in meaningful conversations during workshops.
Participating in Youth Parliament gave her a deeper appreciation for the responsibility that comes with leadership and policymaking, especially in representing the voices and realities of our communities. She said being able to engage in debate, contribute ideas, and connect with other young people who are passionate about the future of the Cook Islands was something she greatly valued.
The experience also highlighted the importance of civic and political education for young people. Tairea noted that learning about the Cook Islands’ own government history and parliamentary processes should happen earlier and more consistently through the education system, rather than only during election periods.
“It reinforced for me how important it is for young people to be included in national conversations, not just as participants, but as active contributors to shaping solutions and policy directions,” she said.
